Postcolonial Britain

I want my blog to have my own creative thoughts that I hold close to my heart. I want my readers to be able to clearly know where I stand on a specific topic. Currently, our world is experiencing another wave of protests based on racism. Racism has been around ever since black people were brought on this earth. It is something that has improved over time, but is not 100% gone. There are many different ways to be considered racist. Racism is not just based on the color of someone's skin, it can also be about their religion, or anything else that sets them apart. My last few blogs discuss racism, and if you have not read them yet, I suggest checking them out.

Hanif Kureishi wrote about a father and son relationship that got ruined due to his son joining a different religion. In this text the father became very skeptical of the son and thought he was possibly doing drugs.Through the text we experience the relationship between the two get worse and worse until the son decides to act more mature than the father does. This text proved that even family can be torn apart due to different beliefs. During the Postcolonial Era culture and religion seemed to go hand and hand (Gearon.) This goes to show in both the father and the son. The father loved his new culture and was accepting his new ways. Whereas his son wanted something different for his life, so he decided to join a different religion which brought on a different culture and way of life for him.

In the last few weeks I have read many different texts that shed light on African Americans in a negative way. Talking about their physical appearance to how they are mentally. Majority of African Americans were slaves, but some were able to get their earned freedom. Skilled slaves were able to earn a living for themselves, and at times were able to buy their own freedom. Manumission was another way that a slave could become free, this was based on a decision from their master to free them for their hard work (Free African Americans.) This was a very hard time period for people dealing with hardships with race and religion. In some cases people did not have any support from family. Which can still happen today, our society today is constantly changing. People's sexual preferences, their religion, and political views are all very hard topics that can cause big problems in families.

This website shows how family can have different opinions on religion and still respect one another. For family members going through a tough time of disapproval by their family it is important to know they always have someone to talk to.
